Civil Suits

MAD AND THE NLG SUPPORT EFFORTS TO SUE

MAD has collected, and continues to collect, many testimonials and evidence of police misconduct through our legal observers in the streets and various interactions with activists. MAD is working with the National Lawyers Guild (NLG) to bring civil rights actions. (The legal folks in MAD are also in the NLG.)

As many of you know, the NLG has been at the forefront of civil rights lawsuits to challenge government repression against the right to dissent in Seattle, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia and New York City, among other places.

If you want MAD and the NLG to represent you, we need your information. Download the police misconduct form, fill it out and send it to MAD.

If you think you have a valid civil suit or would like to find out, call one of the MAD attorneys:

Andrea Costello (352) 271-****
Rob Ross (561) 241-****

STATUS OF CIVIL SUITS FILED

MAD and the NLG filed a civil lawsuit in federal court challenging Miami's "streets and sidewalks" protest ordinance as well as their permit scheme. Review the complaint filed in federal court or check out the MAD press release explaining the lawsuit. This lawsuit ultimately forced the City of Miami to repeal its unconstitutional protest ordinance.

Another lawsuit, Killmon v. City of Miami, challenged the method of policing protest, referred to as the "Miami Model." After a favorable ruling in the Eleventh Circuit, plaintiffs in Killmon settled for nearly $900,000.

Review the Killmon complaint or the Eleventh Circuit decision.

RECOVERING LOST OR STOLEN PROPERTY

If you are trying to recover lost, destroyed or unreturned personal property, please see our page on missing property info. Document it on our form attached to that page and submit it to us just like police misconduct forms. As part of our case against the police, we need to know what the police did with your possessions.
