Penelas Responds To FTAA, Police Criticism

Ch. 10 News
March 12th, 2004

MIAMI -- Democratic Senate hopeful Alex Penelas defended Miami-Dade County police on Thursday when faced with questions about police tactics used during November’s Free Trade Area of the Americas talks.

During a forum for senate candidates in Coral Springs, a retiree asked the Miami-Dade County mayor why FTAA demonstrators were treated poorly during the talks.

Penelas says he takes full responsibility for any wrongdoing by the county’s police department, then pointed out the city of Miami’s police department -- not the county police -- were in charge during the meetings.
